Homeschool Voyager's Weather Report


In wrapping up our weather studies, we wanted to come up with an activity to sort of tie it all together. And I think we did!

First, we had the little voyagers watch a few weather reports on youtube, to get an idea of what they involve -- including some funny ones -- or bloopers.

Next, we talked about our current weather, made predictions, and checked the local weather forecast on the internet. (weather.com)

After we decided on what the report should include, we worked the the little voyagers on the script. 

Since this was their first real video report, we tried to keep it simple, and give each little voyager a role in the broadcast.

Weather in San Diego can be pretty boring sometimes, but on this day, Mother Nature was on our side, and even provided us with some rain!

NATURE STUDY.
The Robin.
BY EDITH A. ROBERTSON, NEW YORK CITY.
 
Material. A picture of the robin, blackboard drawing. A robin's nest and eggs.

Introduction. Where have the birds been all winter? Have all the birds come back? What birds have come? What are the first to arrive? What do they tell us?

Development. Our American robin must not be confounded with the English robin redbreast, although both bear the same name. It is the latter bird in whose praise so much has been written. The  American robin belongs to the Thrush family.

Migration. The robin is one of the earliest heralds of spring, coming as early as March, and is one of the latest birds to leave in the autumn, many times remaining all winter. Robins migrate singly or in flocks.

Length—about ten inches.
Head—nearly all black.
Eye—round, brown with a white ring around it.
Bill—medium length; curved; strong and yellow.
Throat—streaked with black and white.
Breast—chestnut or rusty red. The breast is brightest in the spring.
Back—dark olive gray.
Wings—brown.
Tail—black, a little rounded; outer feathers edged with white.
Legs—slender; black.
Claws—black, slender for perching.

Have children notice whether the robin hops or runs.

The Nest. It is sometimes built in the corner of a porch, but oftener it is placed upon the horizontal limb of an orchard tree. It is so large and poorly concealed that any boy can find it, yet it is seldom molested.

The masonry of the nest is rough and the material coarse, being composed of moss, dead leaves, old grass, lined with hair, and cemented with mud.

The Eggs. The eggs number four to six, and are greenish blue in color, commonly spoken of as ''robin egg blue."

Food. The robin feeds for a month or two on' strawberries and cherries, but generally on worms and insects picked out of the ground.

Song. The robin is not one of our most charming songsters, yet its carol is sweet, hearty, and melodious. Its principal song is in the morning before sunrise, when it mounts the top of some tall tree, and with its wonderful power of song, announces the coming of day.

When trained, it imitates the sounds of various birds.

In early spring the robin may be heard at noon or in the afternoon; in summer, early in the mornings.

Robin is "the bird of the morning."

Habits. The robin is hardy, noisy, frolicsome, neighborly, and domestic in his habits; strong of wing and bold in spirit. The robin courts the" society of man, following close upon the plow and the spade, often becoming quite tame.
It destroys the larvae of many insects in the soil.

The Young. The young robins stay in the nest till about eleven days old. From early morning till nearly dark the parent birds keep up a constant search for worms. The worms are beaten up to a pulp by the parent birds before fed to the young. The old birds only leave their little ones to eat and bathe.

Here is Robin.
He has a pretty red breast.
Robin is very happy. He is singing in the apple tree.
Mr. and Mrs. Robin built the nest.
It is made of leaves, grass, hair, and mud.
The nest is big and strong.
It holds five little eggs.
By and by there will be five baby robins.
Mr. and Mrs. Robin will be busy.
They will feed the little ones.
They will teach them to fly.
Then the little ones will say good-bye and fly, fly, far away.

Windmills, Art and Weather

While searching for resources for our weather studies, I found several windmill-themed paintings, many by famous artists. This seemed like a great way to incorporate art and science.

Back in the early 1900s, primary teachers used a lot of classical art for picture studies, even in the wee grades. Early exposure to art history is akin to early exposure to classical poetry - valuable and important! What better way to spark interest and ideas than to see what great and creative people have done in the past -- to get an idea of what is possible!

Studying "windmill" art might inspire:
poetry
creative writing
architectural drawing
engineering
-- even farming or sailing!

Questions you might ask:

How are they the same?
How are they different?
What is the weather like in each picture?
What do you notice about the clouds?
What time of day?
What might be the reason for windmills near the shoreline?
If you could choose to be in one of these places, which would it be, and why? 
What kind of paint do you think was used to paint each picture?

For Further study: 

Study the artists: Read their biographies. Look at their other paintings. What do you notice?

Choose one painting: Write a poem to illustrate the scene.

Write a letter: Imagine you are a sailor on the ship, or a person in the rowboat. Write a letter to someone telling about your day.

Be an artist: Paint your own windmill picture!

Even the whisper of a wind
Will woo these wind-catchers
To creak and groan, round and round,

This next piece is a little bit of Americana. The article tells the importance of this wind-powered technology, and the basics of how it works:

The Windmill
Early Texans thirsted to move west, yet the thorns, sand, and heat of the West Texas wasteland kept them at bay. Because there was too little water, traveling -- much less settling down -- was well-nigh impossible, and worse, a new encumbrance called barbed wire barred most farmers and ranchers from the few existing trickles of creek. Unbeknownst to them, the Ogallala and Edwards aquifers lay in cool promise a hundred feet underground, waiting for discovery.
Enter the windmill. By tapping West Texas' hidden resources, the wind-activated water pump opened up for small-scale farming and ranching a good half of Texas once thought uninhabitable. On the heels of civilization came diversification, as the windmill and its successor, the electric pump, allowed ranchers to increase the size of their herds and farmers to expand from dryland crops to irrigated ones like corn.
In age the windmill is a piker next to an aquifer, yet the windmill has existed for more than a thousand years. Today's classic sunflower shape appeared only in 1854, created by Daniel Halladay, a Connecticut mechanic. When Halladay discovered that there wasn't a market in the Northeast for his sturdy, self-regulating pump, he headed to Chicago, where the burgeoning railroad industry realized its value: The windmill could enable steam locomotives to cross the dauntingly dry Great Plains. Dozens of manufacturers jumped in on the act, producing oddities like an umbrella mill that furled its slats protectively when the wind became too fierce and decorator mills with elaborate gingerbread, fancy paint jobs, and wrought-iron froufrou. But only Aermotor, 101 years old, is well known today. In 1986 the company bowed to the inevitable and moved to Texas, its major market. Its San Angelo factory produces a thousand or so every year.
A windmill works this way: A breeze spins the slats of the wheel, which moves a shaft; the shaft in turn moves gears connected to a guide wheel; that moves a rod up and down, drawing water into an adjacent tank (so-called -- usually the tank is just an earthen pond). Look closely, and you can see the moving rod, the on-off lever, the ever-present bullet holes in the vane or tale, and possibly a tin cup hanging on a nail to serve a passing cowboy...

Just print out and follow the instructions shown. This looks like a fun windmill to make!

This windmill refers to another volume of Primary Occupation Work, which is not online, so you will have to envision the description of how to make the base, or be creative and design your own!

Or, you just might want to make a pinwheel, to simulate how wind power can be harnessed -- like we did in our earlier post! They are great fun for the youngsters.

Bubble Day!

As we continue working on our weather theme, Mama Voyager came up with a fun way to explore the wind -- A Bubble Day! After all, it takes wind to make bubbles, right?

Let's start with the bubble activity that was a success -- Bubble Wands made with pony beads and pipe cleaners. These are so easy to make, and so much fun! Our little voyagers have been working on patterns in math, and it must have made an impression on Rosetta, because she created a pattern with her pony beads when making her wand.


First, you take a pipe cleaner and bend it in half...


Like so... sort of twist the ends together on the one end; form a loop on the other.


Slide pony beads on the pointy end until you almost reach the end of the pipe cleaner.


When you have about this much left, bend the end up so there are no sharp ends. 
(This one is not all the way bent, but the pictures were blurry, sorry!)


Get a bowl and some bubble liquid...


Claim your own personal bubble space....if you're Saralina, 
that means far away from everyone else!


And blow....


Blow....


Blow like the wind! 
And then, if you're like Spiderman...
figure out new and exciting ways to make even more bubbles!

We decided to use the Bubbles poem, at the top of the post, for a quick memorize/recite activity to go with the activity..

And now ----- the not so successful, Crazy Bubbles! 


This is a neat little starter kit to make all kinds of 3-d shapes that make crazy bubbles. The problem was that if you made a cube like this:
Think about how much bubble solution it would take, and the size of the container you would need in order to make bubbles! Yep, that is correct, we did not have enough solution, or a big enough container --- so NO BUBBLES!

And we did try to use the smaller blue rods to make a mini-cube, but there aren't enough in the starter kit to do that!

Rain is Falling


We have just starting incorporating poetry memorization in our homeschool curriculum, starting with our weather studies. Memorizing poetry increases cognitive abilities, builds confidence and develops skills necessary for reading.

I remember enjoying these types of challenges as a young student, but I wasn't too sure how the little voyagers would take to it. NO WORRIES! They loved it! I started them off with this short poem about the rain, and Rosetta had it memorized in about two minutes. That was all the motivation our kindergartner, Saralina needed. It took her a little longer, but you can be sure she is very proud of herself!

I found the poem and this cute girl-with-umbrella picture in an old education book and put them on one worksheet. The little voyagers colored them and we hung them over the poem on our practice wall.

For the younger voyagers, I created a printing practice worksheet.

I used the ESL Writing Wizard to create this worksheet.

DIY Friday: Wind Engineer Project #2

Which Way the Wind?

The Little Voyager Weather Station already had a barometer and thermometer, but still wasn't quite complete. We needed to see the wind direction and the changes in direction to help us predict the weather! So today we built a weather vane. This project will actually count toward our Wind Engineer badge, even though it is also an option for the Meteorologist. There are so many projects to choose from, we will definitely doing more than the three required ones for each badge!


We started off with a book hunt -- looking for books with wind themes or events, and added them to our weather/wind non-fiction collection.


Then we gathered our weather vane materials.
Spiderman took our plastic container out to the play area and filled it with sand. 


We cut a tail out of an old file folder, cut a slit in one end of our straw, and used a glue stick (which didn't seem to really do much, as far as holding the tail in place) and slid the tail into the slit in the straw.


Rosetta colored other end of the straw with a bright red permanent marker. This is the end that will point to the direction of the wind. (Pointing north, means the wind is coming from the north and blowing south.)


Next, we pushed the pin through the straw, off center, closer to the tail end, 
as in the how-to video we watched.


Finally, we bent some pipe cleaners for wind direction indicators and stuck them into the sand. We used a compass to tell us which direction (N - S - E - W) to put in which location, once we were outside.

Keeping a Weather Record

The little voyagers continue to use the worksheets in the Living Life Intentionally Weather Packet. Rosetta has become quite proficient at reading the thermometer.


As you can see here, she is recording the temperature twice a day.


She and Saralina are also graphing the weather conditions. 
(Sorry, this one is a little blurry.)


This graph is for the types of clouds they see in the sky.


This fun worksheet is used to illustrate the child's favorite type of weather, then write a sentence about it.

NOTE: I can see a few words in Rosetta's sentence that will be added to her weekly spelling practice!

I created a basic "weather words" printing practice worksheet for Saralina, using the ESL Writing Wizard.  These words can also be added to her "weekly sight words," and used for a weather-themed spelling list.

Ideally, students learn and practice reading the temperature on a real thermometer. But for assessment and permanent proof of mastery, you might consider making these handy worksheets to keep in a student's portfolio or weather notebook:



These worksheets were created using the custom temperature worksheet tool on the SoftSchool website. The nice thing about using this FREE tool, is having he ability to choose the temperatures. For Saralina's (kindergarten) worksheet, I chose basic, round temperatures like 40 and 60 degrees F.

Rosetta, being in 2nd grade can do more difficult ones like 62 and 84.
Not only can you choose temperatures to show on the thermometers, you can also choose (fill it in) ones that just show the temperature!
