Spiderman and Saralina are ready to "go owling."
We decided to veer off the weather path for a fun art project -- Toilet Paper Roll Owls. Judging from all the versions you can find on the blogs, these seem to be quite the popular craft these days. Take a look: The Crafty Crow - Inner Child Fun - KiwiCrate - The Studio
Rosetta taking charge of the read aloud today. Thank you, Rosetta!
During the read aloud of Owl Moon, we took the opporunity to introduce
the OWL method for reading comprehension.
(Observe, Wonder, Link)
We observed it was snowy and cold outside....We wondered if "owling" meant they were going to catch an owl. And Spiderman linked the story to the day the little voyagers saw a real owl while outside with their daddy.
NOTE: Spiderman has linking text-to-self DOWN - he can link anything to a personal experience!
A few other observations-- Each little voyager seemed to have their own purpose in making their owls:
Rosetta's owl was more on the order of a paper doll -- she cut out several different "outffits" so she could change its clothes.
Saralina, the budding Picasso, was all about the process, not the product -- staples, scissors, glue, etc. She needed to use every available tool in the making of her creation.
And Spiderman, well, his owl just needed to be able to fly! And he had very specific ideas of how the wings needed to be. Thank goodness, mama voyager finally got them right! Spiderman and his owl took off and flew around the patio and had a blast!
The Little Voyager's Owl Forest
We weren't satisfied with just making our owls -- they also needed a place to live! So we made a paper bag forest, with a tree for each owl. Since it is Winter, we left the trees bare, but come Spring, we can add some buds and blossoms...the later some leaves, etc. to show the change of the seasons.
EASY - FUN - FREE
Definitely put this on your craft to-do list!
